Serving patients in Chicago, Aurora, and Oak Brook, our double board-certified surgeons specialize in reconstructive procedures that prioritize nasal health and airflow. By correcting a deviated septum, we help our patients improve their quality of life through better respiratory function.

What is a Septoplasty?

A septoplasty is a reconstructive surgical procedure designed to straighten the septum, the wall of bone and cartilage that separates your nostrils. When this wall is crooked or displaced, it is known as a deviated septum, which can significantly block airflow on one or both sides of the nose. Unlike cosmetic surgery, the primary goal of this procedure is to restore the natural internal structure of the nasal passage to facilitate easier breathing.

Am I a Candidate for Nasal Airway Surgery?

Many individuals live with breathing obstructions without realizing that a surgical solution exists. You may be an ideal candidate for nasal airway surgery if you experience the following:

  • Persistent nasal congestion that does not respond to allergy medication
  • Difficulty breathing through one or both nostrils
  • Frequent sinus infections or localized facial pressure
  • Chronic snoring or disrupted sleep patterns due to airway restriction
  • Nasal crusting or nosebleeds caused by uneven airflow

The Septoplasty Procedure

Our surgeons utilize advanced techniques to reposition or trim the deviated cartilage and bone. The process begins with a small incision made strictly within the nasal mucosa. Because these incisions are placed inside the nose, there are typically no visible external scars or changes to the nasal bridge.

Once the underlying septum is exposed, the surgeon carefully removes or reshapes the obstructing portions of the bone and cartilage. In some cases, the surgeon may also perform a turbinate reduction to further clear the airway and maximize breathing improvement. After the septum is centered, the internal tissues are secured with dissolvable sutures.

The procedure is performed under sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the complexity of the reconstruction, and usually takes between 30 and 90 minutes to complete.

Recovery and Aftercare Following Septoplasty

The recovery period for reconstructive septoplasty is relatively brief, with most patients returning to work or light activities within a week. Immediately following the procedure, you may experience mild swelling, congestion, or a “stuffy” sensation as the internal tissues begin to heal. It is essential to keep your head elevated, even while sleeping, for the first few days to minimize fluid retention and pressure.

You should avoid blowing your nose for at least two weeks to prevent disruption of the newly positioned cartilage. Additionally, heavy lifting and strenuous exercise should be paused for approximately 14 days to keep your blood pressure stable. Most internal splints or packing, if used, are typically removed within a few days, leading to an immediate and significant breathing improvement.

Septoplasty Costs and Insurance

Determining the cost of septoplasty in Chicago depends on whether the procedure is performed for functional or cosmetic reasons. A septoplasty performed as a reconstructive surgery to correct a deviated septum and improve breathing is deemed medically necessary. In these instances, many health insurance plans cover surgical fees, anesthesia, and facility costs.

Septoplasty Frequently Asked Questions

A septoplasty is performed using incisions made inside the nose. Deviated portions of the septum are either removed, straightened, or repositioned in order to open the nasal airway and improve breathing. This procedure can be performed without altering the outward appearance of the nose or combined with rhinoplasty techniques to improve breathing and nasal appearance.
This procedure is performed as an outpatient under general anesthesia to keep you both safe and comfortable during the operation.
Dr. Revenaugh and Dr. Smith use the latest techniques in septoplasty to improve your nasal breathing and therefore do not routinely use nasal packing after surgery. This process makes recovery more comfortable without compromising the result.
Most patients will take 1 week off from work or school to recover after septoplasty surgery.
It is best not to blow your nose for the first 2 weeks after surgery in order to allow the nose to heal. Saltwater nasal sprays will help keep your nose healthy and clear while you recover. Your surgeon will discuss the recovery process in detail during your consultation.
Septoplasty surgery is done to improve nasal breathing and will not alter the outward appearance of the nose. Sometimes patients with breathing issues also desire cosmetic changes to their nasal appearance, and septoplasty surgery is performed along with rhinoplasty to improve both at the same time.
