Sun damage, signs of aging, and scarring are just some of the skin concerns that can be addressed with dermabrasion and microdermabrasion. At Rush Facial Plastics in Chicago, IL, our double board-certified physicians have helped countless patients achieve a more youthful-looking complexion with personalized dermabrasion and microdermabrasion treatments.
What Is Dermabrasion/Microdermabrasion?
Dermabrasion and microdermabrasion are techniques used to revitalize the skin, soften scars, and/or blend skin tone differences. These techniques scrape away or “polish” the outer layer of skin in a controlled fashion. Dermabrasion and microdermabrasion can be done on small areas or the whole face.
Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion is a simple yet effective skin resurfacing treatment. A special device equipped with a rapidly rotating wheel is used to remove the damaged surface layers of the skin. This intense form of exfoliation reveals fresher and healthier layers of skin. Compared to microdermabrasion, dermabrasion is a more invasive skin rejuvenation treatment. Depending on the extent of treatment, local or general anesthesia may be necessary.
Dermabrasion can be performed to treat issues like:
- Fine lines
- Wrinkles
- Sun damage
- Discoloration
- Age spots
- Acne scars
Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is a gentler option that still provides effective skin resurfacing. Similar to dermabrasion, a special device is used to gently remove damaged skin cells and other imperfections. You may feel a light sanding sensation throughout the treatment but there should be no discomfort. Because microdermabrasion can remove the top layer of skin without damaging the underlying dermal tissue, recovery is quicker compared to dermabrasion.
Microdermabrasion can be used to address:
- Enlarged pores
- Hyperpigmentation
- Blackheads
- Stretch marks
- Wrinkles
- Light scarring
After Your Treatment
It is important to follow all aftercare instructions we provide to promote optimal healing and results. With both dermabrasion and microdermabrasion, it is vital that you do not expose the treated area to sunlight until the skin has completely healed.
After dermabrasion, the skin may be red and sensitive to the touch for a week or so. It can take a few months for the skin to completely heal before you can see the full results of your treatment.
With microdermabrasion, there is much less sensitivity and irritation. Your skin may feel like it has a light sunburn following your treatment. You will only need a few days of recovery before your skin has healed.

FAQ
What are the benefits of microdermabrasion and dermabrasion?
These treatments promote smoother and more youthful-looking skin and can help to minimize signs of aging, acne scars, stretch marks, and other aesthetic skin concerns.
Is there downtime?
Microdermabrasion has virtually no downtime, and you can return to your activities that day. Dermabrasion is a deeper treatment, so patients often have some redness and skin changes for several days.
