Blepharoplasty

Conveniently located to serve Chicago

Also known as eyelid surgery, blepharoplasty is a procedure to improve the appearance of the upper or lower eyelids. It is performed in our Chicago, IL office to help patients rejuvenate their appearance. Over time, excess skin and fat around the eyes can impart a tired and aged appearance and can lead to the formation of “bags under the eyes,” dark circles, or drooping upper eyelids. Eyelid surgery can restore a youthful and rested appearance to the upper, lower, or both the upper and lower eyelids.

FAQ

Eyelid surgery is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures used to improve the appearance of the face. Over 200,000 cosmetic eyelid surgeries were performed in total in the US last year, and eyelid surgery is the second most often performed procedure in facial plastic surgery behind rhinoplasty.
Eyelid surgery can be performed either awake using local anesthesia, using sedation or “twilight anesthesia,” or while completely asleep. You and your surgeon will discuss the best location for surgery as well as the safest and most comfortable type of anesthesia.
Eyelid surgery is typically done as an outpatient procedure, with patients going home the same day as surgery.
Recovery after blepharoplasty may involve some discomfort, swelling, and sometimes mild bruising around the eyes. These symptoms improve several days after surgery and are mostly gone by 1 week. Pain medications, ice, and ointment are used to keep you comfortable while healing. Any sutures used at the incisions are removed at the 1-week follow-up appointment.
Most patients will require 1 week off from work after surgery. This time off allows for any swelling or bruising to subside and for you to see your surgeon in the office for follow-up before returning to work.
It is safest to wait 2 weeks after surgery before returning to strenuous exercise such as swimming, running, or weight lifting, however, walking and light activity is encouraged starting the day after the procedure. Makeup can safely be worn after around 2 weeks when the sutures are out and the incisions heal.
Bruising after eyelid surgery may occur but typically fades away by 1 week.
Small incisions are hidden in areas of natural skin creases within the eyelid or eyebrow.
Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic procedure that is customized to address the needs of each individual patient. The surgery depends on the degree of correction required to achieve the goal appearance and the overall complexity. An assessment will be performed to help develop your personalized treatment plan and the cost of the surgery will be discussed during your consultation.
Eyelid surgery for cosmetic purposes will not be covered by insurance. However, in some cases, excess eyelid skin can affect the vision, and your insurance plan may cover surgery to correct this.
