Rhinoplasty is a broad term applied to procedures that change the nose. This procedure can be done to change aesthetic features, improve breathing, or both. Features that are often addressed during rhinoplasty include removal of a hump along the bridge of the nose, creating a definition of the nasal tip, and correcting a crooked appearing nose. Many noses have ethnic features that should be carefully addressed. This is commonly termed ethnic sensitive rhinoplasty and can help preserve your identity while refining your nose. Breathing adjustments are often done with a septoplasty or as a component of a septorhinoplasty or revision rhinoplasty.
Rhinoplasty can be accomplished with a traditional open approach, endonasal or closed rhinoplasty, or with a minimally invasive non-surgical rhinoplasty.
Our surgeons use the latest morphing software and 3-dimensional imaging to help understand your goals, select the best treatment for you and deliver the changes you desire.

What to expect during your rhinoplasty consultation
During your rhinoplasty consultation, you will meet with Dr. Revenaugh or Dr. Smith and have a chance to explain your concerns and goals. They will help guide your decision to the treatment that best suits you.
They will ask about your overall health, prior surgeries, medications, allergies, and tobacco history among other things. They will examine the outside of your nose as well as your breathing passages. They will likely take photographs, and these can be used during the consultation or at a later visit to create morphed images that can help understand your goals.
They will discuss the potential risks, benefits, complications, and alternative procedures as well as the type of anesthesia and expected recovery for your procedure.
You will have plenty of time to ask any questions and discuss your decision with your surgeon.
What to expect before and after your rhinoplasty procedure
You will be given pre-operative instructions and information about how to prepare for your surgery. Your surgeon will meet with you prior to your procedure to review your goals and what to expect.
Your procedure will take place in an accredited operating room with the safety of a major medical center you can trust.
After your procedure, post-operative instructions will be reviewed with you. Necessary medications will be prescribed, and our team will check in with you throughout your recovery.
Rhinoplasty can be used to address cosmetic issues with the nose, breathing issues, or both together. Prior rhinoplasty sometimes leads to undesired results, and our doctors are specially trained in revision rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty is one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed nationally. Our surgeons perform hundreds of rhinoplasties each year and are specially trained and experienced to address everything from straightforward minimal changes to complex revision rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty is often combined with procedures to improve breathing. Rarely, rhinoplasty may compromise breathing so choosing an experienced facial plastic surgeon can be essential to achieve your goals.
Rhinoplasty is most commonly a surgical procedure. The goals can be cosmetic, functional to improve breathing or both. It is important that you see a surgeon experienced in both aspects so your nasal breathing and appearance are the best they can be. Revision rhinoplasty
is done in patients who may have had a poor outcome from rhinoplasty. Closed rhinoplasty
limits external incisions. Ethnic sensitive rhinoplasty
and can help preserve your identity while refining your nose. Non-surgical rhinoplasty
is sometimes used for minor enhancements.
Various anesthesia types can be used for rhinoplasty. General anesthesia is typically used, but often for minimally invasive techniques, sedation or even local anesthesia is effective. Regardless of anesthesia type, most rhinoplasties are outpatient procedures, and you may go home after the procedure.
Your surgeon will thoroughly discuss the potential risks and complications of any procedure offered and help you select which is best for you. Fortunately, complications after rhinoplasty are rare. Since our surgeons have extensive training and experience in rhinoplasty, they pay special attention to minimizing any risk or potential complications.
In a traditional or “open” technique there is a small incision just under the nose which heals quite well and is imperceptible once the healing phase is complete. In Endonasal or closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are inside the nose. Non-surgical rhinoplasty
with filler does not involve incisions.
Most patients have tapes and a cast over the nose for 5-7 days. During this time period, many patients stay off of work or school. After the initial few days of healing, your surgeon will remove the dressings, and you can return to most activities. Your surgeon will discuss activity restrictions with you based on your lifestyle. Generally, after 2 weeks, the swelling is minimal. Full healing time lasts up to 12 months for primary cases and can reach 24 months in revision cases. Continuous gradual change and improvements will be seen throughout this time period until the final result is apparent.
Because our surgeons have extensive experience and specialized training in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, they practice techniques that will lead to lasting results both from an aesthetic and functional perspective.
Yes, photographs are taken at the initial consultation and can be modified in the office using morphing software to demonstrate the post-operative result. This is a valuable tool that ensures you and your surgeon are on the same page regarding the specific changes you would like to see. Although it only provides an example of the final result, it can help you make decisions about how much change to make and the specific areas to focus on.
