Fat Transfer

Conveniently located to serve Chicago, Aurora, & Oakbrook Illinois

As we age, so does our skin. The signs of aging become evident on the face with wrinkles, sunken cheeks, and lost facial volume. The sagging facial tissue gives away our age, but there’s a way to keep your youthful look alive by undergoing a fat transfer procedure for the face in Chicago, Aurora, & Oakbrook, Illinois.

At Rush Facial Plastics, we offer facial fat transfer to restore youthful contours and revitalize your appearance.

What is Fat Transfer?

Fat transfer is a procedure that restores volume to areas of the face that tend to thin and hollow over time, including the cheekbones and beneath the eyes. It can also fill deep creases or smooth wrinkles near the nose and mouth. The fat is typically taken from the belly and transferred to the face. This procedure can be performed alone or with other facial plastic surgery procedures to enhance overall facial rejuvenation with fat.

Benefits of Facial Fat Transfer

  • Uses your own fat, reducing the risk of allergic reaction or rejection
  • Provides natural, long-lasting volume restoration
  • Addresses multiple areas of facial volume loss in a single session
  • Can be combined with a facelift for enhanced rejuvenation effects
  • Results in smoother skin texture and improved facial contours
  • Minimally invasive liposuction harvest reduces donor site concerns

Who Is a Good Candidate for Facial Fat Transfer?

Ideal candidates are individuals experiencing volume loss due to aging or other factors, such as bothersome wrinkles, dark circles under the eyes, or hollowed areas in the face. It is also important to have sufficient fat stores in donor areas for harvesting. Candidates should be in overall good health, non-smokers or willing to cease smoking, and have realistic expectations regarding the outcome.

What Happens During the Procedure?

The fat transfer procedure can be performed on its own or in combination with a facelift to obtain better results from the facelift. Local anesthesia is administered in the area from which fat will be removed, as well as the face. Fat is harvested from the abdomen, flanks, or thighs through minimally invasive liposuction techniques. The fat is then carefully processed to isolate healthy fat cells before being injected into targeted facial areas using fine cannulas.

Our double board-certified plastic surgeons will strategically place the fat grafts to restore volume, correct asymmetry, and smooth contour deficits. The entire procedure usually takes 45 minutes to one hour to complete.

In some cases, facial fat transfer is performed alongside a facelift or other facial plastic surgery procedures to optimize results.

What is Recovery Like?

Some swelling is normal after the procedure, but this can be dealt with easily by using ice and sleeping in a propped-up position. Discomfort is generally mild and can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. Applying cold compresses to the treated areas can help reduce swelling.

Limit strenuous physical activity for a week following the procedure. While results become evident within the first five weeks of the procedure, your final results will appear in six months. The body naturally reabsorbs a percentage of the transferred fat, and the surviving fat cells establish a new blood supply, providing long-lasting volume.

Cost of Facial Fat Transfer

The cost of facial fat transfer will include the extent of volume needed, the number of areas being treated, the amount of fat harvested, and the type of anesthesia used. Because autologous fat transfer is a highly customized procedure, a precise cost estimate is provided only after a thorough consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

During the procedure, discomfort is minimized through the use of local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. Post-procedure, patients typically experience mild to moderate discomfort, which can be managed effectively with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication.
Fat transfer uses your body’s fat tissues to improve the appearance and youthfulness of your face. This makes it a much safer procedure than others, as there are lower risks of complications when the patient’s own fat tissues are used.
Fat tissue is obtained from the abdomen using a minimally invasive approach to collect the fat before face treatment. This provides your body’s own tissue to improve your appearance without incisions or injection of facial fillers.
Facial fat transfer can address volume loss in various facial areas, including the cheeks, temples, under-eye hollows, nasolabial folds (smile lines), marionette lines, chin, and jawline. It can also improve the appearance of scars or enhance lip volume.
At your initial consultation about the fat transfer procedure, you’ll have a chance to clarify any doubts after you’ve read the details. Your medical history will also be evaluated, and you will be asked to stop taking certain medications that could negatively impact the procedure's outcome. This includes aspirin, herbal supplements, and anti-inflammatory drugs.
